Diamonte Kamari Powell, affectionately known as “DJ,” departed this life on April 19, 2026, at the age of 18. Born on September 20, 2007, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, DJ was raised in the District, where he formed lifelong friendships and left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
DJ was outgoing, charismatic, and full of life. He never met a stranger and had a way of bringing laughter, energy, and joy wherever he went. Known for his sharp sense of humor, intelligence, and vibrant personality, DJ was truly the life of the party. He was fiercely loyal to the people he loved and proudly carried the role of the “little big brother” to those closest to him.
He enjoyed football and played for the Beacon House Falcons. He also attended Zion Church and had a deep passion for music, especially artists such as Rod Wave, Lil Durk, and YoungBoy Never Broke Again.
DJ began his education at DC Prep Elementary School, attending through the fourth grade before continuing at Langley Elementary School. He later attended McKinley Middle School and The SEED Public Charter School of Washington, DC, for grades nine through eleven. He completed his senior year at KIPP DC College Preparatory School, graduating in 2025. DJ looked forward to building a future filled with opportunity, growth, and purpose.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving mother, Natarsha Preston; father, Derick Powell; sisters, Kiara Powell, Eriel Jones, and Dionne Powell; great-grandmother, Constance Fantroy; and aunts, Christina Brown, Kathy Brown, Cecelia Fantroy, and Tershanda Huff.
DJ was preceded in death by his brother, Derrick Powell Jr.; grandmothers, Jean Brown and Carole Fantroy; and great-grandmother, Irma Brown.
Though his passing leaves an unimaginable void, DJ’s spirit, laughter, and love will forever remain in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.
